RESEARCH QA HOLD — 4-WEEK AND 52-WEEK HISTORY NOT VERIFIED
Current net, prior net and one-week changes were calculated from the October 13 CFTC futures-only records and embedded weekly changes for all 15 selected contracts. Four-week deltas and 52-week percentiles could not be independently reconstructed from the full official historical series in this run. N/V marks these unavailable fields. All -5 to +5 scores and the composite are PROVISIONAL, not final validated releases. No historical figures are fabricated.

Executive Positioning Read
The Tuesday October 13 CFTC snapshot shows large asset managers still net long S&P and Nasdaq futures, while cutting Russell and Dow length. Managed money reduced net longs in WTI, gold, silver and copper. Treasury asset managers added substantial 10-year note length, while CME Bitcoin and Ether leveraged funds remained net short but covered part of those shorts. The critical divergence is timing: this positioning predates Friday’s 4.5% Nasdaq weekly decline and AI credit stress. The preliminary cohort signal is mildly constructive in large-cap futures but fragile across the broader risk complex.
Layer 1 — CFTC Institutional Positioning Matrix
All net figures are selected-cohort futures-only long contracts minus short contracts. Prior net = current net minus (weekly change in long minus weekly change in short), using the CFTC published change fields. Each row refers to a specific standard contract, not all related micro, nano, or exchange variants. Four-week change = current minus the September 15 position, but cannot be computed without a verified matching historical record. 52-week percentile requires the complete 52-week matched cohort series.

Score legend: +5 Extreme Bullish; +4 Strong Bullish; +3 Bullish; +2 Moderately Bullish; +1 Slightly Bullish; 0 Neutral; -1 Slightly Bearish; -2 Moderately Bearish; -3 Bearish; -4 Strong Bearish; -5 Extreme Bearish. Arrow: ↑ net positioning improving, ↓ deteriorating, → broadly stable. All scores below are provisional.
PROVISIONAL score method: net/open-interest regime, 1-week net change/open interest, cohort economic role and a crowding adjustment. Full scoring also requires verified 4-week change and 52-week percentile; those components are withheld, so these values MUST NOT be presented as the validated SSJ score. Extreme longs can remain bullish but increase reversal vulnerability. Treasury asset-manager length may reflect basis/hedge structures; crypto futures positioning is not total crypto ownership.
Methodology and Validation
| Method Component | Treatment / Status |
| Report basis | CFTC futures-only; TFF financial futures, Disaggregated physical commodities; CME standard BTC/ETH. |
| Cohort selection | Asset Managers for ES/NQ/YM/RTY/US/TY; Leveraged Funds DX/EC/BTC/ETH; Managed Money GC/SI/HG/CL/NG. |
| Current/prior/1-week | Verified from Oct. 13 official CFTC current positions and change fields; prior inferred arithmetically. |
| 4-week | N/V for all 15; requires matching Sept. 15 official contract/cohort records. |
| 52-week percentile | N/V for all 15; complete matched 52-week series not independently retrievable. |
| Provisional scoring | Net/OI regime + weekly change + cohort role + crowding adjustment; history-dependent inputs excluded. |
| Interpretation | TFF/Disaggregated cannot identify motives; spreads, basis trades and hedges can distort directional meaning. |
Layer 2 — What Changed This Week?
1. 10Y Treasury (TY) — Asset Managers | 1-week net change +70,423 | +4 ↑, provisional
10-year Treasury-note asset managers increased net length from +2,828,139 to +2,898,562 contracts, adding 70,423 net. Longs rose 70,647 while shorts rose only 224. Net length equaled about 49.8% of open interest, a crowded exposure that can still be bullish for Treasury-note prices but vulnerable to reversals. The weekly cash 10-year yield declined toward 5.10%, a partial price confirmation; basis trades and hedges remain a major caveat.
2. Russell 2000 (RTY) — Asset Managers | 1-week net change -15,967 | +1 ↓, provisional
Russell asset-manager net length fell from +45,495 to +29,528 contracts. Longs declined 11,503 and shorts rose 4,464. That is a broadening bearish small-cap signal: the cohort stayed net long, but the direction deteriorated sharply. The Russell fell about 3.0% during the week, so positioning and price agree on small-cap weakness.
3. WTI crude (CL) — Managed Money | 1-week net change -13,024 | +1 ↓, provisional
WTI managed-money net length dropped from +53,598 to +40,574 contracts as longs fell 6,380 and shorts rose 6,644. The cohort reduced directional exposure before Brent surged to $109.86 on Friday. This is a notable divergence: futures traders were less bullish as physical supply risk pushed prices up later. A geopolitical headline can overpower a Tuesday positioning snapshot.
4. Dow (YM) — Asset Managers | 1-week net change -8,749 | +1 ↓, provisional
Dow futures asset managers cut net length from +19,622 to +10,873 contracts, with longs down 6,127 and shorts up 2,622. The cash Dow nevertheless gained 0.7% for the week while the Nasdaq lost 4.5%. That divergence warns against reading a single institutional futures cohort as a prediction; the position date was Tuesday and later sector rotation changed cash-market outcomes.
5. S&P 500 (ES) — Asset Managers | 1-week net change +9,220 | +3 ↑, provisional
S&P E-mini asset managers added 9,220 net contracts, from +906,615 to +915,835, equal to about 47.4% of open interest. This is still a strong bullish positioning regime, but a crowded one. The S&P subsequently lost 1.9% for the week and AI credit stress accelerated. Tuesday positioning is therefore diverging from Friday price; it is not a fresh Friday buy signal.
Layer 3 — Cross-Market Institutional Positioning Signal
Provisional SSJ Institutional Positioning Signal: +1 / +5 — Slightly Risk-On in selected Tuesday futures cohorts, with significant defensive divergences. Large-cap equity asset managers remained net long; Russell and Dow cohorts reduced exposure. Treasury-note asset-manager length increased, metals managed-money length softened, CME crypto leveraged funds remained net short but covered, and WTI longs contracted before Friday’s oil rally. This is NOT a validated composite: 4-week and 52-week components are unavailable, and Tuesday positioning predates Friday’s AI-led equity rout. The practical conclusion is a transition warning, not a trade signal.
SSJ Positioning Scorecard
| Asset Class | Score* | Trend | Message |
| Dollar / FX | +1* | ↑ | DX leveraged +1,212 net; EUR leveraged shorts narrowed +1,838 net. |
| Equities | +2* | ↓ | ES/NQ length grew, but YM -8,749 and RTY -15,967; Friday price fell. |
| Treasuries | +3* | ↑ | TY +70,423 net; US -14,094; large basis/hedge caveat. |
| Precious Metals | +2* | ↓ | Gold -3,898 net and silver -1,909 net; still net long. |
| Industrial Metals | +3* | → | Copper -76 net; positive positioning broadly stable. |
| Crypto | -2* | ↑ | CME BTC/ETH leveraged shorts narrowed, but remain net short. |
| Energy | 0* | Mixed | WTI -13,024 net; nat gas short covering +18,056 net. |
| Composite | +1* | ↓ | Mild large-cap positioning support, major price/sector divergence; provisional. |
Three Permanent Flags
Strongest Bullish Positioning
10Y Treasury-note asset managers: +2,898,562 net contracts, +70,423 in one week, roughly 49.8% of open interest. This is the largest positive directional cohort exposure in the selected set, but may include basis/hedging strategies; do not confuse it with a pure duration forecast.
Strongest Bearish / Defensive Development
Russell 2000 asset managers cut net exposure by 15,967 contracts to +29,528 while the Russell lost about 3.0% for the week. WTI managed money cut 13,024 net contracts before a Friday oil price spike. Both show a less supportive institutional risk appetite.
Most Important Divergence
The central divergence: Tuesday S&P E-mini asset managers added 9,220 net contracts to a crowded +915,835 while the Nasdaq lost 4.5% and AI credit stress worsened by Friday. Broad equity funds drew +$13.01B, but technology sector funds lost $5.21B. This is an example of lagged futures positioning and fresh price/flow evidence moving in different directions, not proof of a coming rebound.

| Crypto | Signals: liquidity-sensitive risk-off | BTC -5,844, +1,008; ETH -6,283, +1,666 | Potential transition — shorts covering, still net short |
Decision Chain and Overall Conclusion
Apply the SSJ sequence: macro → capital flow (including COT) → options sentiment → technical confirmation → fundamental confirmation → risk trigger / invalidation. COT is a Tuesday snapshot and a capital-positioning cross-check, not an automatic “smart money” signal. Friday’s Nasdaq/credit stress and VIX above 20 deserve more immediate weight than a Tuesday asset-manager long. Overall conclusion: the cohort data remain mildly constructive in large caps and duration but warn of a fragile transition in small caps, metals and energy. Historical score components are unverified, so the dashboard remains a research QA HOLD pending full 4-week and 52-week reconstruction.
